Saturday 22nd May 2010
The 2010 Border Bogie Challenge will run on Saturday May 22nd, and entries will be accepted from the 1st January 2010 onwards. More details will be published on the Border Bogie Challenge web site over the coming months, but last years details should give you a fair idea of what to expect. Keep looking for updates though.
Please contact the organisers for further details.
14mm axles
14mm axles
Experience suggests that if you stub mount your wheels using 10mm spindles, they will bend and may even shear off completely. 14mm is about the minimum diameter spindles that'll take the loading of an adult plus a reasonably solidly made cartie. 14mm is a common spindle diameter in BMX wheels.
If you've already got MTB wheels on 10mm axles, I'd say your options are fairly limited. You might be able to get the hubs machined out to the take a bigger spindle - not sure if that'd be possible - or perhaps get them re-laced onto some 14mm BMX hubs. Alternatively, change your design and mount the wheels in forks. Last option - forget the MTB wheels and source some BMX wheels on 14mm spindles.
Finally - you don't say how big the wheels are, but I'm guessing 24" or 26" - they'll need to have good strong rims, or they may well buckle. (See about 1 min into this video on youtube for an example).
Good luck!

10mm axles can be used but need to supported on both side.

keep it rubber side down
10mm axles too flimsy for stub mounting
I agree with roo4 - 10mm axles are unlikely to survive unless you mount them on both sides.
Unfortunately, 14mm hubs with disk mounts are very difficult to find. If you are determined to go for stub axles, you might be better off going for 20mm thru axle MTB hubs instead.
You could use TRICE disc

"only £75 for a complete wheel"!
I got a pair of 20" BMX rim
20" wheel with disk hub

Great stuff, Rob - looking
Great stuff, Rob - looking forward to it already.
I hope Team Tunbridge will be there again, regardless of whether they run the Mira cartie or not. Last I heard, they were building a new cartie.

The wheels look a bit flimsy to me, but it shouldn't have any problems making the weight limit.
